Here are a few new math activities on the shelf for December.
This is a seasonal cards and counters variation. The basket holds bells numbered 1-9 and the red bowl holds exactly 45 jingle bells. To do this work, the child lays the number cards out in order (NOTE: I would recommend doing this on a rug; I was just too lazy to set it up that way when I photographed it!) and places the correct number of jingle bells under the bell. See photo below. This is another activity that I had saved from my previous Montessori teaching materials.
This is a new activity that I put together using this very cool star tray I found for $1 at our dollar store along with some ornaments that I bought this summer at a garage sale for about $0.50. This activity is similar to the one I blogged about in November. However, this time the child won't be sorting the ornaments. They will use the tongs to transfer the ornaments to the various spaces on the tray, but the emphasis will be on representing the quantities on the number cards. See photo below.
Even though this is a math activity, I am putting it on my Practical Life shelves because of the tongs and divided tray. That's just my reasoning. It could easily go on the math shelf instead.

Love it all! How sweet was that child?!
