As an extension of our "Planet Earth" song, I created black and white "Where I Live" books that the children can color and take home.
These materials are on the geography shelf. In the basket are the blank books for the children to color. My laminated color copy of the book is displayed in a little stand and there is a bowl of colored pencils.
To do the work, the child takes a blank book, my book and the bowl of pencils to a table. They can use my colored copy as a model to color their own book. The pictures in my book are identical to those used on the necklaces for our song. (See the post link above for more info on that.) Several children have chosen to do this work. Some of them are taking their time and coloring very carefully. On Tuesday morning, one little boy spent about 50 minutes working on his book. It was an outstanding job. That same afternoon, another little girl spent about that long working on her book. Several other children have chosen the work and have rushed through it to get it done. In these cases, I try to encourage them to go back and take their time. However, these situations just illustrate the varying attention spans and motor skills of the children. Since this is a coloring activity and an extension of a song that every child has been exposed to during group time, I won't discourage any child from doing this work. Even if they have rushed through the coloring part, they will still take the books home and (hopefully) have a positive experience with their families as they share their book and the song.

I love your idea for teaching children where they live. Was wondering where you found the patterns to print that match the puzzle pieces? I have been looking on the net forever and can not find.
thank you
