If you have been keeping up with the blog, you know we have been learning about our "love lights" using some activities from the book Honoring the Light of the Child. If you are interested, the book can be purchased from Montessori Services. Click here for a link to the book on their website. I only have the book. The newer version has a CD with it. (Wish I had that too!!)
Anyhoo.........the latest lesson we have done at line time this week is love light pins. This lesson is used to reinforce the concept of every person having a love light inside them. To present this lesson, I made some love light pins from yellow felt. I just cut out circles and hot-glued a pin back to them. You can see the pins in the photo below.
When I presented this lesson, I placed a special box (one I bought this summer at a garage sale; I've been waiting to see what it's special use would be!) containing the pins into my "peace bag." I told the children I had something special to share with them. I asked them to close their eyes. While they did so, I removed a pin and pinned it to my shirt right over my heart. I asked them to open their eyes and tell me if they noticed anything. After they commented, I told them that the pin represented the love light in my heart. Then I showed them the box with all the pins inside. We passed the box around the circle so each child could remove a pin. (NOTE: We didn't pin them on everyone at this time; since they are felt, they could kind of stick to their shirts.) After everyone had their love light we put our hands on our love lights and sang "This Little Light of Mine". I told them that the next time they came to class, the box with the pins would be on the peace shelf. They can get a pin and wear it on their shirt whenver they are feeling especially happy during our work time.
Here is the special box containing the love light pins. The children are really enjoying wearing their pins during classtime. It is a nice visual reminder of the love within their hearts.
