I have just started to add things to our peace shelf and wanted to do a post about it. So, see the photos below along with the descriptions.
On the top of the shelf is our peace candle, silence sign and candle snuffer. These items are only to look at during work time. The children do not have permission to take them off this shelf. Only Miss Laura can do that. We use these items when we make silence during line time.
On the middle shelf is a tray with blank "peaceful person" papers to color. Next to that is the peaceful person and flashlight. The children can take this to a rug to make the "love light" shine in the person's heart. See this post for more about how we use these materials. On the next shelf down is our special box with our love light pins.
This photo shows two pictures that were colored by the same child. I was so touched by this. He worked for almost an entire work period coloring a "peaceful person" paper to represent each person in his family (he has 5 people in the family). He made sure to color the love light on each one. I told him how pleased I knew his family would be to receive his special work.
Here is a little boy using the materials to show the love light on our "peaceful person". On the day I wrote this post (Wednesday) there were two little girls, each wearing a love light pin, who did this work together. I wish I had caught that on camera. It was so sweet.
I love your Peace posts! I have set up a Peace Table in my classroom and will present it on Monday. Right now it is just a small floor table with a pretty cloth, a mirror, and a basket with a soft doll from India and a cut-out of Asia. I got this idea from another blog, http://spiralmontessorimama.blogspot.com/2008/09/peace-and-quiet.html
I plan to add a few more touchable items to this space. My children are all 2-3 years old, and I think the lessons you are giving would work well with my group too!
