Since we have a few rainbow activities out for March/St. Patrick's Day, I decided to set up a group project.........a rainbow mural. The white paper I had wasn't as wide as I would have liked; by the time I got to the "purple" arch, it was really small. I forgot to take a photo before the children started adding to it, but I started with a blank rainbow on the white paper. I did write each color word on the bottom left of each arch in the corresponding color marker to help them with correct color placement. The photo below shows the "long view" of how I have this set up so you can see the "big picture."
I set this up to allow for two children to work on it at the same time. So far this has worked out okay. Below you can see the materials as I have them set up. There is a basket with 2 pairs of scissors, a basket with colored construction paper strips (cut 1 inch wide on the paper cutter), a basket for them to cut their pieces into, and a basket with two glue sticks. To do the work, the child may choose ONE colored strip to cut. Using the scissors, they cut the strip into small pieces, allowing the pieces to fall into the white basket. Next, they use the glue stick to apply glue directly to the white background of the mural, then they attach their colored pieces to the glued area. This has worked well; much better than having them try to apply glue to the little cut pieces of paper. I am limiting each student to cutting and gluing only one strip so everyone will have a chance to contribute to this group project. Since I have 58 different students, I am already thinking I'll have to make a second mural. The following photos show what was accomplished during the first morning that the activity was out.
Below you can see how the mural looked after the first work period that the children worked on it. I think they did a great job. It will look so great when it's finished.
Below is a close-up so you can see where I originally wrote the color words.
Below is our finished rainbow. I hung it in the lobby area of my classroom where the parents wait to pick up the children. I have drawn a second rainbow which is a work-in-progress right now. They finished the first so quickly, I wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to participate. That's why we have rainbow #2 underway.
It doesn't matter is the rainbow is on a poem, a cake , a draw in the wall, in our hair , in the sky or in any other place is always beautiful to see all those colors.

Its funny thatyou wrote about this idea today. I was just in my classroom this afternoon and was pulling something out of a box and saw our mural from last year. I had forgotten about this idea. I am going to set it up again too. Thanks for your reminder!
