I know I'm really late posting this again this month. That's just the way life is going right now. Here is the poem we've been learning for February.
"Nature's Valentine"
Frost flowers on the window glass,
Hopping chickadees that pass.
Bare old trees that bend and sway,
Pussy willows soft and gray.
Silver clouds across the sky,
Lacy snowflakes flitting by.
Icicles like fringe in line,
That is outdoors' valentine.
Here is the poem in our pocket chart along with the accompanying pictures.
Here is our poetry basket/tray for this poem:
It's hard to see in the photo, but for "frost flowers on the window glass" I adhered snowflake stickers to a small mirror; the little chickadee was a gift from a former student; the "bare old tree" is from my Christmas decorations; pussy willows from Hobby Lobby; cloud picture printed from the internet; foam snowflake from my stash; you can't see them well, but the icicles are plastic ones from my mom's Christmas tree decorations; the pink heart is cut from felt. I LOVE seeing pairs of children taking this work from the shelf and retelling the poem together. It truly warms my heart!
What a fabulous way for children to get into poetry, my kids have the same sort of thing at school with story sacks, but I will inform school about this website, in hope that they will take inspiration from your ideas.

Youll love doing the poems this way.We recently pulled out the laminated copies ofall the poems weve done this year and the children could remember every one. It was so awesome!

Hi Laura
I have adjusted your poem ideas to suit the Aussie seasons and am in the process of making a felt board and materials to match the poem I found. I only hope I finish the task. I am one of those people with the best of intentions but I don't always follow through.

I'm enjoying reading your blog. I like the February poem and the props you have to go along with it are neat. I've linked up to your post on my weekly favorites here: http://play2grow.blogspot.com/2011/02/weekly-favorites-for-february-27-2011.html

This is the very same poem we chose for our poetry basket this month! It's lovely, isn't it? Thanks again for the wonderful idea.
